CHANDIGARH: The Catholic community in the city watched transfixed as Argentine Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio was elected Pope, becoming the first Pope from outside Europe in 1,200 years. Choosing the name, Pope Francis, the pontiff struck a chord with the Papal message in which he sought the blessings of people as a favour.
"I was awake till 2am to hear the news of the appointment and the speech of the Pope.

I felt blessed as the Pope addressed people humbly and demanded a favour from them to bless him. It was a unique thing as no one has done this before. I wish his tenure goes smoothly and he spreads the message of brotherhood to keep Catholics united," said Bishop Ignatius Mascarenhas.
TOI spoke to Catholics in the city to find out their reactions. Kenayra, a student said, "I felt good to hear the news as we got a new head of the Catholics. I expect him to spread the message of Jesus and be free from all allegations."
Arnus Masih who runs an NGO, was visibly sentimental about the new Pope. "It felt like our father had gone somewhere and now he is back. The pope heads our community and we follow him with great faith. I expect the new Pope to guide the community so that it grows in a positive direction."
However, respect for the Pope is not restricted to one community. Gurpreet Gill, a social activist said, "Like every school needs a teacher, every community needs a leader. The Pope is like our teacher and we respect his words. I wish he faces all challenges and spreads the dictum of Christ."
Renju Paul, private employee said, "We were waiting for the new appointment as it holds religious significance for us. I want the new Pope to address the people and give them a direction so that they follow the order of God."
